Frequently Asked Questions About Otoplasty

What is otoplasty and what does it correct?

Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to change the shape, position, or proportion of the ears. It is primarily used to correct prominent ears that stick out too far from the head, treat ear asymmetry, and reshape misshapen ears caused by birth defects or physical injuries.

What is the best age to get an otoplasty procedure?

The best age for otoplasty is typically between 5 and 7 years old. At this stage, a child’s ear cartilage is stable and has reached about 85-90% of its adult size, yet it remains pliable enough for easy reshaping. However, the procedure is also highly successful and common for teenagers and adults of all ages.

How long is the recovery time after ear pinning surgery?

Initial recovery from otoplasty takes about 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients can return to school or non-strenuous work within 7 days. You will need to wear a protective headband over your ears, especially at night, for 4 to 6 weeks to support the healing tissue and maintain the new ear position.

Does otoplasty leave permanent visible scars behind the ears?

Otoplasty does result in scars, but they are generally hidden. Incisions are strategically placed in the natural creases behind the ear or within the inner folds. Over time, these surgical marks fade significantly, making them virtually invisible to other people during daily interactions.

Are the results of cosmetic ear surgery permanent?

Yes, the structural results of an otoplasty are permanent. Once the ear cartilage is reshaped, pinned back, and fully healed, the ears will maintain their new position for life. It is rare for ears to revert to their original shape unless a severe physical trauma occurs during the early healing phase.

Is otoplasty performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia?

The choice of anesthesia depends on the patient’s age and comfort level. Young children usually undergo general anesthesia to ensure they remain completely still during the operation. For teenagers and adults, the procedure is frequently performed using local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation.

Does otoplasty improve or alter your hearing ability?

No, otoplasty does not affect your hearing. The surgical procedure only reshapes and repositions the external ear structure, known as the pinna or auricle. Because the operation does not involve the internal ear mechanisms or the ear canal, your hearing capacity will remain exactly the same as before.
