What is Nose Aesthetics (Rhinoplasty)?

Nose aesthetics, or rhinoplasty, is the name given to surgical operations performed to change the shape of the nose.

If there is a broken nose as a result of an accident, if there is a genetic or congenital problem, if there is a breathing problem, rhinoplasty can be performed.

What is Nose Structure?

The upper part of the nose consists of bone and the lower part of cartilage, covered with skin. It has an important place in the respiratory system.

How is Nose Aesthetics Performed?

Rhinoplasty can involve modifying the bone, cartilage, skin, or a combination of all three, depending on what is deemed necessary.

Before the procedure;

The patient’s expectations are discussed in detail, and the doctor provides all the necessary explanations to ensure clarity.

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries certain risks.
These may include infection, bleeding, or an adverse reaction to anesthesia.

A key aspect of the consultation process is the surgeon’s inquiry into the patient’s motivations and goals for undergoing the surgery.

Being completely honest about these expectations is crucial for achieving the desired outcomes.

The surgeon will also clarify what results rhinoplasty can realistically offer and what is beyond its scope.

Following this discussion, the surgeon will gather detailed information about the patient’s medical history, including issues like nasal congestion, prior surgeries, and any medications currently being used.

Individuals with certain conditions, such as bleeding disorders like hemophilia, may not be suitable candidates for the procedure. The next step involves a thorough physical examination.

This includes laboratory tests like blood work, assessing facial features, and examining both the internal and external structure of the nose.

This allows the doctor to identify necessary changes and evaluate factors like skin thickness or cartilage strength at the nose’s tip, which can influence the final outcome.

Additionally,

This exam helps determine how rhinoplasty might impact breathing functions.

Following surgery, patients typically stay in the hospital for monitoring overnight and are discharged the following day.

A follow-up appointment is scheduled within 3–4 days to monitor recovery progress and address any concerns.

Preparations Before Nose Aesthetics

If there are drugs used continuously two weeks before the operation, they should be left under the supervision of a doctor. You should definitely talk to your doctor about drugs that are impossible to quit. Some types of medication can increase bleeding. Only drugs approved or prescribed by the nasal surgeon should be used.

Also, herbal remedies, natural remedies, and supplements should be avoided. It is necessary to stop or take a break from smoking. Smoking slows the healing process after surgery and increases the chance of getting an infection.

What Happens During Nose Surgery

A surgeon can adjust the shape of the nasal bones or cartilage in various ways, based on factors such as the amount of tissue to be removed, the type of connection needed, the structural characteristics of the nose, and the materials at hand.

In cases where the septum—the partition separating the two nostrils—is crooked or deviated, it can be corrected to improve airflow. This particular procedure differs from rhinoplasty and is referred to as septoplasty.

For minor changes, the surgeon may use cartilage from the deeper points of the nose or ear. Larger changes may use cartilage from implants, ribs, or other parts of your body. Upon completion of these changes, the surgeon places the nasal skin and tissue back and sutures the cuts.

After Nose Surgery

Usually, internal dressings stay in place for one to seven days after surgery. The surgeon may also tape a splint to the nose for protection and support.

Typically, this is kept in place for about a week. To minimize bleeding and swelling after rhinoplasty, it is important to rest with your head elevated above chest level.

Applying ice packs post-surgery can help reduce both swelling and bruising. Swelling or the placement of splints during the operation may temporarily block the nasal passages.

Mild bleeding mixed with mucus or accumulated blood is expected for the first 3–4 days until the dressing is removed.

Your doctor will provide specific instructions to help prevent further bleeding or potential damage to the nose.

These precautions may include:

  • Avoiding strenuous physical activities like aerobics or running,
  • Refraining from blowing your nose,
  • Consuming fiber-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, to prevent constipation,
  • Limiting excessive facial expressions, such as laughing or giggling,
  • Brushing teeth carefully to reduce movement of the upper lip,
  • Wearing front-opening clothing, like button-up shirts, to avoid unnecessary pressure on the nose

In addition, glasses or sunglasses should not rest on the nose for at least four weeks after surgery. It is possible to tape the glasses to the forehead until the nose heals. Sunscreen with factor 30 should be used outside, especially on the nose. Too much sun during this period can cause permanent discoloration of the nasal skin.

Two to three days after rhinoplasty, temporary swelling or black-blue discoloration of the eyelids may occur for three weeks. It may take even longer for the nasal swelling to subside.

Staying away from sodium during feeding will help the swelling go down faster. It would be best to take a week off after the surgery.

Rhinoplasty Results

Rhinoplasty is not a simple but a difficult operation. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the nose is a three-dimensional and complex shape located in the middle of the face.

Although the changes made during rhinoplasty are very small, these changes can make a big difference in the appearance and functioning of the nose. Since these changes are small, the margin of error is also high.

It is important to remember that, just like the rest of the body, the nose continues to change over the course of a lifetime following surgery.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Aesthetics) FAQ

What is Rhinoplasty and what can it achieve?

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure designed to reshape or resize the nose to achieve better facial harmony or to correct structural defects.

Beyond cosmetic enhancement, rhinoplasty is frequently performed for functional reasons, such as correcting a deviated septum to improve airflow and breathing.

The procedure can address a wide variety of concerns, including reducing the size of the nasal bridge (removing a “hump”), refining a bulbous or drooping nasal tip, narrowing the nostrils, or changing the angle between the nose and the upper lip.

Because the nose is the central feature of the face, even subtle changes can result in a significant improvement in overall aesthetic balance and patient self-confidence.

How long is the typical recovery time after a nose job?

The rhino-plasty recovery timeline varies by individual, but most patients can return to work or school within 7 to 10 days.

During the first week, a nasal splint and bandages are typically worn to support the new structure. Most of the visible swelling and bruising around the eyes will peak at day 3 and usually subside significantly by the end of the second week.

However, it is important to understand that internal healing takes much longer. While you will see a noticeable difference once the splint is removed, “residual swelling” can persist for months.

It typically takes a full 12 months for the nasal tissues to completely settle and for the final, refined shape of the nose to become fully apparent. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise and contact sports for at least 4 to 6 weeks post-surgery.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

Surgeons generally utilize two primary techniques:

  • Open Rhinoplasty
  • Closed Rhinoplasty.

The choice depends on the complexity of the correction required.

In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, meaning there are no visible external scars. This method is often preferred for minor reshaping and results in a slightly faster recovery time with less swelling.

Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue separating the nostrils). This allows the surgeon to “open” the skin for a direct view of the underlying nasal anatomy.

While it leaves a tiny, usually invisible scar, the open technique is often necessary for more complex cases, such as major tip refinement, revision surgery, or significant structural grafting, as it provides the surgeon with maximum precision and control.

Can rhinoplasty surgery fix breathing problems?

Yes, many patients undergo a procedure known as Septorhinoplasty, which combines cosmetic reshaping with functional correction.

Breathing issues are often caused by structural abnormalities such as a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or nasal valve collapse.

By straightening the internal cartilage and bone, a surgeon can widen the nasal passages and significantly improve the patient’s quality of life.

If you suffer from chronic nasal congestion, snoring, or difficulty breathing through your nose, these issues can be addressed simultaneously with aesthetic changes.

In many cases, addressing the internal structure actually provides a stronger foundation for the external cosmetic results, ensuring the nose not only looks better but functions optimally as well.

Are the results of rhinoplasty permanent?

Rhinoplasty is considered a permanent surgical procedure. Once the bone and cartilage have been reshaped and the healing process is complete (after the one-year mark), the results are intended to last a lifetime.

Unlike non-surgical “liquid nose jobs” involving fillers, which dissolve over time, the structural changes made during surgery do not “wear off.”

However, it is important to remember that the nose is still subject to the natural aging process. Over several decades, skin elasticity changes and the cartilage may shift slightly, just as it would in a nose that had never been operated on.

Additionally, significant trauma to the face can alter the results. To ensure the longevity of your results, it is vital to follow all post-operative instructions and choose a board-certified surgeon with extensive experience in nasal anatomy.
