Obesity is an increasing health problem across Turkey and the world. Obesity, defined by the World Health Organization as \u201ca build-up of fat that negatively affects health in the body\u201d, is the disruption\u00a0\u00a0of the body\u2019s energy balance and the increase of body weight to a degree that harms health due to consumed energy being at a higher level than expended energy.<\/p>\n

Obesity is accepted as being 30% or more of a mature woman\u2019s body weight and more than 25% of a mature man\u2019s body weight. More than being a singular problem, obesity is an illness that must be treated as it is the most significant risk factor causing cardiac and blood pressure illnesses, diabetes, kidney disease, respiratory system disease, joint illness and sudden\u00a0strokes.<\/p>\n

Obesity is a chronic illness that negatively affects quality of life and increases the risk of death.<\/p>\n

How common is obesity?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

According to World Health Organisation data, approximately 2.3 billion people are overweight globally and another 700 million are obese. According to the same data, excessive weight and\u00a0obesity are the cause of 80% of diabetes, 35% of heart conditions and hypertension in adults in Europe and the deaths of more than one million people. It is known that there are at least 150 million people are obese in Europe today.<\/p>\n

According to data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, the rate of obesity in Turkey grew from 15.2% in 2008 to 19.9%\u00a0in 2014.\u00a0\u00a0This rise over 6 years resulted from 32.3% women and 24% men.\u00a0 According to the Ministry of Health\u2019s\u00a0data, one of three women and one of five men have obesity that must be treated. Unfortunately, Turkey has the third highest rate of obesity in the world, following the U.S. and Iceland.<\/p>\n

How is obesity treated?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Obesitiy is an illness that affects many of the body\u2019s organs. This is why its treatment requires the creation of a multidisciplinary plan where many\u00a0 ranches work together.<\/p>\n
