While a normal spine has natural curves from front to back, a spine with scoliosis bends to the left or right, often forming a “C” or “S” shape on an X-ray. This spinal deformity most commonly develops during the growth spurt just before puberty, typically between the ages of 10 and 15, and can vary from mild to severe.

</details>

<details class="faq-item">

What are the primary causes of scoliosis in children and adults?

The most common type is idiopathic scoliosis, meaning the exact cause is unknown, though it heavily tends to run in families due to genetic factors. Other specific types have clear causes, such as congenital scoliosis, which is a bone deformity present at birth. Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by conditions affecting muscles and nerves, like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. In adults, degenerative scoliosis is caused by the gradual wear and tear of spinal joints and discs over time.

</details>

<details class="faq-item">

How can you identify the early symptoms of scoliosis?

Early symptoms of scoliosis usually involve noticeable asymmetries in posture and body alignment. Common indicators include uneven shoulders where one shoulder blade sticks out more than the other, an uneven waistline, or one hip appearing higher than the opposite hip. In more advanced stages, the rib cage may protrude more on one side when bending forward, and severe curves can cause localized back pain or breathing difficulties as the spine presses against the lungs.

</details>

<details class="faq-item">

Is scoliosis caused by bad posture or carrying heavy backpacks?

No, scoliosis is not caused by poor posture, sleeping positions, physical activities, or carrying heavy backpacks to school. These factors can certainly cause temporary back strain, muscle fatigue, or poor alignment, but they do not alter the structural anatomy of the spine or trigger structural scoliosis. Structural spinal curves are deep physiological conditions driven by genetics, growth variations, or structural defects.

</details>

<details class="faq-item">

What are the non-surgical treatment options available for scoliosis?

Non-surgical treatments depend entirely on the patient’s age and the severity of the spinal curve. For mild curves under 20 degrees, regular monitoring and observation through periodic X-rays are standard practice. For moderate curves between 20 and 40 degrees in growing children, custom-fitted back braces are prescribed to stop the curvature from worsening. Specialized physical therapy, core-strengthening exercises, and low-impact activities like swimming also help manage discomfort.

</details>

<details class="faq-item">

When is spinal fusion surgery required for severe scoliosis?

Scoliosis surgery, most commonly spinal fusion, is typically required when the spinal curvature exceeds 40 to 50 degrees and continues to progress despite conservative treatments. Surgery is highly recommended if the deformity threatens lung function, causes severe unmanageable pain, or drastically impacts the patient’s physical appearance and mobility. The procedure realigns the curved vertebrae and fuses them together using metal rods and screws to stabilize the spine.

</details>

<details class="faq-item">

Can a person with scoliosis live a normal life and exercise?

Yes, the vast majority of people diagnosed with scoliosis can lead completely normal, active, and fulfilling lives. Mild to moderate scoliosis rarely restricts daily routines, physical activities, or career options.
