The metacarpals are made up of five long bones that connect the carpal and phalanxes.<\/p>\n<p>Structurally, the metacarpal bones can be divided into four parts: base, trunk, neck and head. Gradually, you may experience a decrease in grasping ability.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Diagnosing a Boxer&#8217;s Fracture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and take a medical history.<\/li>\n<li>Physical examination of the hand will be done by looking for signs such as the following.<\/li>\n<li>Cracks in the skin<\/li>\n<li>A lump under the little finger<\/li>\n<li>Deformed visible joint<\/li>\n<li>Different shape on the outside of your hand<\/li>\n<li>Imaging studies such as X-ray, MRI or CT scan will be ordered to confirm the diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Boxer&#8217;s Fracture Treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Treatment of a Boxer&#8217;s fracture depends on the severity of the fracture.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Your treatment plan may include:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Taking a combination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids to manage pain<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding activities that trigger symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Applying ice packs on a towel to the area to reduce swelling and pain<\/li>\n<li>Raising your hand above heart level<\/li>\n<li>To have tetanus vaccination if necessary<\/li>\n<li>Cast or splinting to immobilize the hands for several weeks<\/li>\n<li>Physical therapy to regain strength and mobility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Surgery may be recommended if you do not respond to conservative treatment options.
