In this procedure, x-rays of the coronary arteries are taken using a special dye (contrast material).

Coronary arteries are the main blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the heart itself. Coronary angiography is used to detect narrowing, obstruction or other abnormalities of these vessels.

This information plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart attack or angina.

The coronary angiography procedure is usually performed through a small incision in an artery located in the patient’s groin or wrist. The coronary arteries are then accessed using a catheter (a long, thin tube). Contrast material is injected into the coronary arteries via the catheter. The circulation in these vessels is monitored with an X-ray device. In this way, narrowing, blockages or abnormalities in the coronary arteries can be clearly visualized.

Coronary angiography is usually performed by a specialist doctor in a hospital or cardiology center. Local anesthesia is applied to the patient during the procedure. Light sedation may be given if needed. The procedure usually takes about an hour. It is usually carried out safely. However, sometimes complications (bleeding, infection, tissue damage after angiography, etc.) may occur. Therefore, it should be carefully evaluated by specialist doctors.

Who Should Not Have Coronary Angiography?

Coronary angiography is usually performed on people with coronary artery disease or heart conditions. However, in some cases, coronary angiography may not be appropriate. Below are some situations in which coronary angiography is not recommended:

Serious Kidney Disease:

The use of contrast material may damage the kidneys. Therefore, coronary angiography may be risky in people with severely impaired renal function.

Allergic Reactions:

People with hypersensitivity to the contrast material may develop allergic reactions. Allergic reactions can be severe and life-threatening.

Pregnancy:

Performing coronary angiography during pregnancy is generally not recommended because of the potential harm of radiation to the fetus. However, in some cases, coronary angiography may be performed during pregnancy if the mother has a serious heart problem and other alternatives are inadequate.

Risk of Serious Bleeding:

Coronary angiography should be carefully considered in individuals at risk of serious bleeding due to certain diseases or bleeding disorders.

Advanced Age:

Coronary angiography may be risky in older people, especially if they have other health problems and weakened general health.

These situations provide an overview of whether coronary angiography is risky or inappropriate. However, each patient should be evaluated individually and a decision should be made in line with your doctor’s advice. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate treatment option for you, taking into account your condition and risk factors.

Coronary Angiography: Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="angio-faq-item">

What is coronary angiography and why is it performed?

Coronary angiography is a specialized diagnostic procedure that uses X-ray imaging to see your heart’s blood vessels. It is primarily performed to see if there is a restriction in blood flow going to the heart.

Doctors use this procedure to diagnose heart conditions, plan for future treatments (like angioplasty or stents), or identify the cause of chest pain (angina) and shortness of breath. It is the “gold standard” for evaluating coronary artery disease (CAD).

</details>
<details class="angio-faq-item">

How is the angiography procedure carried out?

The procedure is performed in a specialized room called a Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath Lab). Here is what typically happens:

Access: A small thin tube called a catheter is inserted into an artery, usually through the groin (femoral artery) or the wrist (radial artery).

Guidance: Using X-ray guidance, the doctor carefully threads the catheter up to the heart.

Contrast Dye: A special liquid dye is injected through the catheter. This dye makes the blood vessels visible on X-ray screens.

Imaging: As the dye moves through the arteries, the doctor takes “movies” (angiograms) to identify blockages or narrowing.

</details>
<details class="angio-faq-item">

Is coronary angiography painful or dangerous?

Most patients find that the procedure involves minimal discomfort. You are usually awake but given a sedative to help you relax. A local anesthetic is used at the insertion site (wrist or groin), so you should only feel a dull pressure rather than sharp pain.

While angiography is generally very safe, it is an invasive procedure and carries minor risks, such as bruising at the puncture site or a reaction to the contrast dye. Major complications are extremely rare.

</details>
<details class="angio-faq-item">

How long does the recovery take after angiography?

The procedure itself usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. If it was through the groin, you will need to lie flat for several hours to prevent bleeding. Most patients go home the same day, but you will need someone to drive you. Full recovery usually occurs within a few days, during which you should avoid heavy lifting.

</details>
<details class="angio-faq-item">

What is the difference between an angiogram and an angioplasty?

The two terms are often used together but have different purposes:

Angiogram: This is the diagnostic part. If a blockage is found during the angiogram, the doctor may immediately perform an angioplasty to open the artery, often by inflating a small balloon and placing a stent to keep the vessel open.

</details>
<details class="angio-faq-item">

What should I do to prepare for the test?

Your medical team will provide specific instructions, but general preparation usually involves:

Fasting: Not eating or drinking for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure.

Medication Adjustment: You may be asked to temporarily stop taking certain medications, especially blood thinners or diabetes medication (like Metformin).

Hydration: Drinking plenty of water the day before to help your kidneys process the contrast dye later.

</details>

[639

What is Coronary Angiography? - Plastic surgery in Istanbul

<meta name="description" content="Coronary angiography is a medical imaging method used to examine the heart vessels.
